Drawn from the barleycorn tweeds of Scotland and Ireland, the surface is flecked rather than patterned, two colors knit together into a fine, quiet texture. An initial sits at the crown, a name around the brim.

This is the earflap version, with flaps that cover the ears and hold the hat steady on a head that will not stay still. The same design is knit as a plain beanie if you prefer it without.

Each hat is made to order in the USA in a soft, hardwearing acrylic that holds its shape wash after wash. Choose your base and accent from twenty-nine colors, and it becomes a piece made for one child alone.

Children's head sizes vary so please select size carefully. Because our hats are handcrafted, slight size variances can occur due to design and yarn color choices.

Is a personalized hat a good new baby gift?

What does the tweed effect look like?
A fine fleck, the way barleycorn tweed reads from across a room. It is knit into the cloth rather than printed onto it.

What goes in each field?
A single letter at the crown, and a first name of up to nine characters around the brim.

Would it suit an older child?
It is one of the more grown-up designs here. In Heather Gray with Charcoal it sits happily on a teenager, or an adult in the Large size.

Which size should I choose?
Small suits a baby up to a year, at roughly a seventeen-inch head. Medium covers one to four years at about twenty inches, and Large fits four years through adult at around twenty-two. If a child falls between two sizes, take the larger, the knit has give, and a hat that lasts two winters is the better gift.

Regular or earflaps?
Earflaps for babies and toddlers, who lose warmth through their ears and rarely leave a hat where it was put. The plain beanie suits older children who want the design without them.

• As easy to love as it is to care for: Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle. Do not bleach. Lay flat to dry or tumble dry on low heat.
